Croquis d’Orient is an invitation to travel, a musical and poetic journey through the perspectives that European composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries held of the Orient. This programme brings together rare works, imbued with the flavours of faraway lands, blending sensuality, dreamlike exoticism and poetry. The recital opens with Félix Fourdrain’s *Alger le soir*, set to a poem by André Alexandre, a veritable soundscape evoking the lights and mysteries of the city. It continues with *Les Adieux de l’Hôtesse Arabe*, a text by Victor Hugo set to music by several composers, including Bizet, Vaucorbeil and Coussemaker, each bringing their own sensibility to this emotionally charged poem. The centrepiece of the programme is Georges Hüe’s cycle *Croquis d’Orient*, based on texts by Tristan Klingsor. These delicate miniatures blend harmonic subtlety with narrative charm, sketching scenes that straddle the boundary between dream and legend. Finally, the *Arabic, Moorish and Kabyle Songs*, collected and harmonised by Francisco Salvador Daniel immerse us in the richness of the Maghreb’s oral traditions, transcribed with respect and fascination by this committed Orientalist composer. A richly colourful programme, straddling folklore and art song, brought to life by the luminous voice of Amel Brahim-Djelloul and the sensitive playing of Nicolas Jouve.
