Séraphine Cotrez sings Beethoven's Mass in C Major

With the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Massy

Who does not yet know the generous and rare voice of the young mezzo Séraphine Cotrez will have an opportunity to discover her in the next days, during three concerts with the Orchestre de l'Opéra de Massy, conducted by Constantin Rouits; she will sing the alto solo part of Beethoven's Mass in C Major.

Second liturgical work composed by Beethoven and unfortunately too often in the shadow of his famous Missa Solemnis, the Mass in C Major is nevertheless grandiose. The composer himself said that he "treated the text as rarely has it been treated". Indeed, Beethoven exploits new expressive dimensions of the liturgical text, particularly modern and visionary. From the introductory Kyrie to the final Agnus Dei, the Mass explores the possibilities of the soloists and the choir, mixed with the richness of its orchestral pages.

After studying Applied Arts, Séraphine Cotrez turned to music and in 2014 was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (Françoise Pollet's class), from which she graduated in 2019; with Jérôme Corréas' Les Paladins, she has already been heard on tour in France (role of Dardano, in Handel's Amadigi) and in the roles of Clorinde and Venus (Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and Il ballo delle ingrate) at the Reims Opera, or in the alto solo part of Mozart's Mass in C minor with the Orchestre de Cannes Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (conducted by Nicolas Krüger).
